Independence Challenge

1. Plant something. Have to admit I am falling behind on this. Did pretty well in February and early March, then got busy with work stuff and ended up barely taking care of the seedlings I had! Need to get back on track and into a routine again with checking daily, planting weekly and generally gardening daily again.

2. Harvest something. Yay lots of things to report on this one! Peas, chard, collards, cauliflower and oranges. Probably other things too I need to check my list.

3. Preserve something. Nothing preserved, other than saving homegrown produce in the fridge for leftovers :)

4. Prep something. I've been planning more of the garden, reading more books on edibles and generally doing the research phase. In the front garden ideally I'd put a trellis up the wall and grow veggies/fruit up there, BUT it's north facing so that's not a great idea. So research research research, and maybe some trial and error later :)

5. Cook something. Part of my new challenge to myself is cooking one new thing a month. This starts NOW!

6. Manage your reserves. Had the opposite of preserving in March where I tried to eat out the freezer and get our frozen supplies down. Some food was well past it's prime, and we had 5 tubs of icecream in there (bought back in the day before grocery lists, and menu plans!).

7. Work on local food systems. Still waiting to work on this one. Perhaps next month I'll start this. I really want to get out to the local farm and see what is for sale, see what eggs they have and see how much their produce is compared to the market.

8. Reduce waste. Food waste is going ok, though last week was bad with lots of produce going into the compost. General trash we are doing well on at a couple of bags a week. Pretty much we only fill the bin about 1/4 full each week, if that. This is all without really trying too!
